OUTLINE

    Tokyo Institute of Technology has had a long history of great contribution to the development of the society through research and education of science and technology for over one hundred years, since its forerunner, the Tokyo Vocational School was founded on May 26, 1881. The Centennial Hall, Tokyo Institute of Technology was planned as a monument for the celebration of our one hundred years of history and also for the expected development of the Institute. It was established in November 1987 by the fund from a number of graduates and members of the industrial community. It was designed by Dr.Kazuo SHINOHARA, Professor Emeritus of the Institute. The Hall's purpose is to collect, preserve and exhibit the materials and records of Tokyo Institute of Technology's history of research and education in the fields of science and technology, and to utilize them for future development. These include world famous inventions and discoveries. In addition, the Hall offers spaces for communication such as conference rooms and halls where the staff graduates and students can hold all kinds of academic and educational activities.


PERMANENT EXHIBITION HALL •STORAGE

    Permanent Exhibition Hall (basement) : Selected research results of the Institute, art works of outstanding graduates, and historic documents relating to the Institute's foundation and development to university status are exhibited.

  • Ceramic and design artists who studied at T.I.T. : including works by Kanjiro KAWAI, Shoji HAMADA, Keisuke SERIZAWA, Kozo KAGAMI, and Tatsuzo SHIMAOKA
  • Collection of ceramics by Prof. Kosuke HIRANO
  • Documents of university reforms after the 2nd World War by President Koroku WADA
  • Documents of the foundation of Department of Chemical Engineering by Prof. Shun'ichi UCHIDA
  • Research on synthetic rubber by Prof. Shu KAMBARA
  • Research and development of television by Dr. Kenjiro TAKAYANAGI
  • Research on the synthesis of vitamin B2 by Prof. Toshio HOSHINO and Tetsuo SATO

Storage

    Historic materials of research and education for science and technology are stored and exhibited. These include a Stirling engine, Parsons turbine, spinning and weaving machines, an early stage robot, hologram, records for the Research Laboratory for Nuclear Reactors and a DNA synthetic machine. Historic materials, recorded documents and photos relating to education, research activities and administration of Tokyo Institute of Technology are also stored here.
